A Seva Bharathi Project Blind School at Mangalore-Inaugurated Today.
ROMAN AND CATHERINE SCHOOL
FOR THE BLIND

...3rd Cross, Kotekani Road,
Kapikad, Bejai Post,

MANGALORE 575004

“We
Walk In Hope”
Introduction:

A new beginning has been made with the setting up of a
full-fledged School for the Blind Children of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and
surrounding Districts. It has been a dream of Dr. U. V. Shenoy and “Seva
Bharathi” Trust for the last two decades to establish a School for the Blind.
It has atlast become a dream come true mission. Mention must also be
made of Ms. Carmine Lobo, it is due to her relentless efforts that she and Seva
Bharathi have come together in fulfilling the dream and giving better opportunities
for the Blind Children from these Districts. Seva Bharathi under the guidance
of Dr. U. V. Shenoy has already been engaged itself in a School for the
mentally challenged by name “Chetana Child Development Centre” at V. T. Road,
Mangalore-1.

Do we need a Blind School in
Dakshina Kannada District? The answer is a positive “Yes”. In the past, these visually impaired Children used to go and
study in Blind Schools that are quite far from their homes, thus going away
from their parents and other loved ones. Now it has become possible for these
children to study in a residential school for the blind.

What is a Residential School for the Blind?

In a Residential School
other than informal and formal education, free boarding and lodgings are
provided. Food, uniform, toilet items like soap, toothpaste, etc are provided
totally free of cost. Every child’s needs are met.

Objectives of Roman and Catherine School for the Blind: In
this School, we teach formal education as per The Karnataka Education Board
syllabus. Along with this, Computer Education and Computer skills will be
taught using the most popular screen reading / talking software known as JAWS.
For the partial visually impaired, Computer applications will be taught using
the screen magnification software. The other informal methods of Education will
include orientation and mobility, independent living, Handicrafts, special
games like Cricket, Chess, etc. The medical facilities of the student, if
necessary will be taken care by the School with the total consent of parents or
guardian of the Student. The parent or guardian will be contacted by the School
Authorities in person or by Telephone.

Our aim is to impart First to
Seventh Standard Education in Braille (a script used for reading and writing by
visually impaired.) which will include subjects like English, Kannada, Hindi, Science,
Mathematics, Social Studies, Physical Education, Moral Education, etc. When a
student completes Seventh Standard, he or she will be admitted to a High School
(Eighth Standard of a normal School under the New Integrated Education Policy
formulated by the Sarva Shikshan Abiyan, Government of India. Even in this case,
the student will lodge within the premises of the Blind School
and the student will be given proper counseling and career guidance by specially
trained personnel.

Goals:

In
the short term, our ambition is to impart Education for the visually impaired Children
of D.K., Udupi and the surrounding Districts. Our wish is to make the sighted People
aware that disability is neither a disease nor a curse, it is a problem which
can be solved through proper guidance & rehabilitation. Given an
opportunity, these People can also lead a normal life. In the long term, our
goal is to make the visually challenged stand on their own feet and open to
them the wide doors of knowledge based Society and create opportunities for
them in the hope that they will play a role in the Nation Building.
What you can do:

First
of all our benevolent request to you is to inform the Families of Blind Child,
if any in your vicinity about our School and convince them to admit the Child
in the School. Secondly,
to help us in whichever way possible from your side in the day-to-day running
of the School a) by donating liberally towards recurring expenses b) by
donating towards acquiring fixed assets like furniture / fixtures / Computer / Braille Books &
Materials etc. c) Sponsoring a Child in the School d) by becoming a Volunteer
to work during your free time. For
